Psychological Assessment and Testing in Walnut Creek and Corte Madera, CA

Psychological assessment is a structured, evidence-based process used to better understand cognitive, academic, attentional, emotional, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental functioning.

At AgapeHealth Psychological Services, evaluations are designed to do more than assign a diagnosis.

The goal is to identify strengths, explain important patterns, clarify areas of concern, and develop practical recommendations that can be used at home, at school, at work, or in treatment.

AgapeHealth evaluates children, adolescents, young adults, and adults, with a focus on developmental, educational, attentional, cognitive, emotional, and diagnostic questions.

What Can a Psychological Evaluation Assess?

An evaluation is designed around the questions that need to be answered.

Psychological or psychoeducational assessment may help explore concerns involving:

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Neurodevelopmental differences

Executive functioning

Learning differences

Dyslexia

Dysgraphia

Dyscalculia

Reading, writing, or mathematics concerns

Academic achievement

School performance

Cognitive abilities

Intellectual functioning

IQ and gifted program eligibility

Gifted and twice-exceptional profiles

Emotional and behavioral functioning

Anxiety or depression

Personality

Memory and thinking concerns

Intellectual or developmental disabilities

Diagnostic clarification

Multiple or overlapping concerns

A comprehensive evaluation may be especially useful when difficulties appear in more than one area or when previous explanations have not fully accounted for the person’s experience.

Comprehensive Psychological and Psychoeducational Evaluations

Comprehensive evaluations examine several areas of functioning rather than focusing on only one symptom.

Depending on the referral question, testing may evaluate:

Cognitive abilities

Academic achievement

Attention

Executive functioning

Behavioral functioning

Social and emotional functioning

Learning and information processing

Developmental concerns

Diagnostic considerations

This broader approach can help identify connections between different challenges and create a more complete support plan.

Comprehensive evaluations may also provide documentation that clients or families can share with schools, therapists, psychiatrists, physicians, or other appropriate professionals.

ADHD Evaluations

An ADHD evaluation considers more than whether a person occasionally becomes distracted.

The assessment may examine:

Attention

Impulse control

Executive functioning

Organization

Working memory

Behavioral patterns

Developmental history

Academic or occupational functioning

Emotional wellbeing

Information from parents, teachers, or other appropriate sources

Because symptoms related to anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep, learning differences, and autism can sometimes overlap with ADHD, the clinician may evaluate other possible explanations as part of the process.

Autism and Neurodevelopmental Evaluations

AgapeHealth provides evaluations for autism and other neurodevelopmental differences.

An autism evaluation may consider:

Developmental history

Social communication

Repetitive or restricted behaviors

Sensory experiences

Emotional functioning

Daily living skills

Attention and executive functioning

School, work, or relationship experiences

Masking or compensatory strategies

Other conditions that may present similarly

AgapeHealth’s assessment providers use a neurodiversity-affirming and culturally responsive approach that recognizes both strengths and support needs.

Learning and School-Related Evaluations

Persistent difficulty with reading, writing, spelling, or mathematics may be associated with a Specific Learning Difference.

AgapeHealth evaluates concerns involving:

Reading impairment and dyslexia

Written expression and dysgraphia

Mathematics impairment and dyscalculia

Academic achievement

Cognitive and processing abilities

Attention and executive functioning

Emotional factors that may affect learning

The goal is to distinguish a learning difference from other possible explanations and provide individualized recommendations for school, home, treatment, or daily functioning.

Recommendations may include guidance related to classroom support, academic interventions, an Individualized Education Program (IEP), a 504 Plan, or other accommodations when appropriate.

IQ and Cognitive Testing

AgapeHealth offers standalone IQ testing for purposes such as:

Private school admissions

Gifted and Talented Education programs

Gifted program placement

Academic talent searches

Selective enrichment programs

Cognitive testing may examine verbal reasoning, visual-spatial abilities, fluid reasoning, working memory, processing speed, and other abilities, depending on the measure used.

Lower-fee testing options may be available through supervised trainees. Families should confirm whether the school, program, or organization requesting the evaluation will accept testing completed by a supervised trainee.

Focused
Evaluations

A focused evaluation is designed to answer a narrower question.

It may be appropriate when the concern is clearly defined and does not require a comprehensive examination of multiple areas.

Because attention, learning, emotional, developmental, sleep, and medical concerns can overlap, the clinician will first determine whether a focused evaluation can adequately answer the referral question.

What Is the Psychological Testing Process?

1

Diagnostic conversation

The process begins with a diagnostic interview lasting approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

For children younger than 10, this initial conversation generally takes place with the parents or caregivers.

2

Testing appointments

Testing generally involves approximately 6 to 10 total hours.

Individual assessment appointments may last two to three hours and may involve:

  • Paper-and-pencil activities

  • Computer or tablet-based measures

  • Interviews

  • Questionnaires

  • Remote administration

  • In-office testing

The specific measures and format depend on the person’s age, referral question, and type of evaluation.

3

Feedback meeting

After testing is completed and the information has been reviewed, AgapeHealth schedules a feedback meeting lasting approximately one to two hours.

During this collaborative meeting, the clinician explains the findings, answers questions, and reviews recommendations.

4

Written report

Clients receive a comprehensive written report that may be shared with schools, therapists, psychiatrists, physicians, or other appropriate professionals.

The report is generally completed two to four weeks after the final testing appointment.
